Septic arthritis: A 50-year-old man presented with a 2-day history of atraumatic right middle finger swelling, redness, and pain. There was tenderness and swelling of the dorsal, medial, and lateral aspects of the proximal interphalangeal joint. There was pain with axial loading of the joint. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate was elevated. The leukocyte count was normal. Joint aspirate revealed a white blood cell count of 50 000/mm3 suggestive of septic arthritis. Here is a close-up view . (L.S.)
