What is PAIGE?
PAIGE is a computer program that generates patient educational material and instructions for treatment and follow up. The name stands for Patient Instruction Generator. The program was written for use in Emergency Departments by
Bruce Argyle, M.D. of
Mad Scientist Software. The Primary Care Database was written
by Bernard M. Sklar, M.D. to
expand the use of PAIGE to typical outpatient settings such as Family Practice, Internal Medicine and Urgent Care Centers. What does PAIGE do?

How do I get PAIGE?
1) What does PAIGE do?
- A) In its simplest form, PAIGE serves as an electronic filing cabinet in which the medical practice can store patient education handouts. In this function, it is similar to many other patient information handout programs. However, doctors can add or change handouts much more easily than with most programs.
- B) By selecting handouts for medical conditions, treatment and follow-up, PAIGE can generate a personalized summary of today's office visit, including:
- (1) A nontechnical description of the patient's medical condition(s).
- (2) Which medications will be prescribed for each condition, how the medication works, and possible side effects.
- (3) Instructions for follow-up, e.g., lab, x-ray, other tests, next office visit, specialist referrals.
- (4) It can also generate personalized prescriptions, work and school releases, authorization and referral forms.

2) How can PAIGE help a medical practice?
- When we inform patients about their illnesses and treatments, they are more likely to follow through on recommended care. They also will be more satisfied with their care. Keeping a copy of the patient instructions in the chart provides excellent documentation for medicolegal purposes.
- Doctors can use PAIGE for education of staff, and medical and mid-level trainees. They can use PAIGE to standardize treatment and prescribing practices for all members of a practice.
- PAIGE can print Spanish instructions. This avoids confusion and helps the patient care for himself where there's a language barrier.

3) How can PAIGE help an IPA, HMO or large group practice?
- Preferred medications, procedures and treatments can be highlighted. Non-formulary medications and nonapproved procedures can easily be deleted.
- Lists of specialists, pharmacies, laboratories, x-ray and other facilities can be adapted to conform with those approved for the particular health plan.

4) How can PAIGE help a pharmaceutical company?
- Certain medications can be highlighted or placed in a superior position, making their selection more likely by the treating physician. Non-formulary medications and procedures can easily be deleted.
- Click to see a pharmaceutical-distributed instruction set.
5) How does a practice get started using PAIGE?
- PAIGE can be installed on an IBM-compatible computer in about five minutes. It runs under either Windows or DOS. It uses either a laser or dot-matrix printer.
- The Primary Care Database presently has descriptions of more than 200 medical conditions, 250 medications, and 200 combined illness and treatment combinations. More are being added currently. These handouts can be used "as is."
- Instructions referring to specific specialists, labs, x-rays, pharmacies, etc. must be changed to conform to the practice. A secretary can do this in several hours using the PAIGE Editor. If desired, medications for specific indications can be highlighted or placed in a superior position.
6) How about adding or changing handouts?
- PAIGE comes with directions for adding or changing handouts. You can also import handouts from other sources into PAIGE or export from PAIGE into other documents. If desired, you can change the arrangement of the handouts.
7) How do I get PAIGE?
- PAIGE is produced by Mad Scientist Software in Utah.
